Light from the Word and through the lens

John 4:24-26

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”

There are times when Jesus’ words cut to the heart. In his encounter with the woman at the well Jesus seems almost harsh in his assessment of the Samaritan’s faith. He says, “You [Samaritans] worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.” (John 4:22) No punches pulled here! And that isn’t the only challenging word Jesus speaks:

Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. (John 4:16-18)

These comments are intended, however, not to harm, but to lay open the woman’s heart so that the healing balm of God’s love can be poured into her soul. Jesus is not intent on hurting this woman’s feelings. He wants to give her living water. He has no need to embarrass her, he is there to save her.

She might look many different places for comfort in the face of her personal pain. She may have experienced much abuse and hardship along life’s way. But Jesus has been anointed with the Holy Spirit and brings grace and mercy to sin and truth.

When the woman at the well gets to the point: “…when Messiah comes…” Jesus responds in gracious and truthful candor: “I who speak to you and he.” When we embrace the truth of Jesus’ identity, intent, and love, we will indeed worship the Father in spirit and in truth. That is a very good thing.
