John 3:19-21
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

I once took a complete roll of film of Bobby Kennedy only to discover that I had left the lens cap on my rangefinder camera. The discovery in the of that fact darkroom was a moment of great disappointment. In order for film to capture an image the light must reach the film. When it does so – in a highly controlled manner – the results can be stunning.
Jesus talks about the light of truth reaching into our souls and revealing something either very good or very evil. In fact, those who are of God, he says, are willing for their souls to be seen. That is because Jesus lives there.
We have nothing to brag about as God’s people. Even those who do what is true wish it to be seen that it is God who is at work in them. When you see someone bragging, or making a show of his supposed godliness, beware. Those who are of God come into the light to show God’s glory not their own. And if you know someone who will not come clean pray that he or she will seek the light of God’s grace and find the truth of the previous verses here in John 3 to be comforting:
John 3:16-21
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
