Light from the Word and through the lens

John 5:9b-10

Now that day was the Sabbath. 10So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” (Click here to read the full story in John 5.)

The warning signs read, “Litter is unlAWFUL”. Indeed, litter is not only unlawful; it is also awful. It can ruin a landscape. It communicates a lack of care or of pride. But apparently the Jews who questioned the man Jesus healed didn’t care about litter. They cared only that by carrying his litter he was breaking sabbath law.

They didn’t celebrate the man’s healing – perhaps because they did not recognize him to begin with. He had been a faceless “invalid” at the pool for some time. So they question him. They tell him his litter-carrying is unlawful.

How easy it is to overlook the person in our pursuit for lawfulness! How easy it is to overlook the “invalids” (I hate that word!) in our path. How easy it is to pass by those who are crippled, lame, sick, and hopeless.

Jesus did nothing of the sort. He sees the man. He heals his infirmary. He gets him up and going. He is God at work. God sees you – whether you’re stuck in a futile job, or laid up by injury, or just going through the motions in life. When he acts it is to bless and set us free. Perhaps he will see you today, and get you up. If he does, thank God. If he does it for someone else praise God!
