Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 21:23-27

And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

A rabbi once said, “If you fear God more than you love wisdom you will still have wisdom. But if you love wisdom more than you fear God you will neither fear God nor be wise.” I’m not certain that’s true – or even if I totally understand it. But I do know that the chief priests and elders of the people in Jesus’ day feared the people more than they feared God.

This is telling. For you can possibly make the case that the Jewish leaders of Jesus’ day were seeking to defend their faith, and not just guard their own power. But, if in fact, their actions are shaped more by their fear of the people than their fear of God, then the mask is off. They have forfeited their claim to be God’s leaders.

The question for today is this: do you fear God more than your boss, your spouse, your co-worker, or your challenging neighbor? If that is so, what decisions will you make because of that fear? How will you respond to the temptations that come, the challenges that are presented, or the opportunities before you today?

We don’t talk too often about fearing God these days. But to fear, love and trust in God above all things is the meaning of the first commandment: “You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:1)
