Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 21:23-27

And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

When a police officer holds out his badge it is a sign of authority. His gun is a symbol of power. Authority allows proper use of even deadly force. In the realm of God’s kingdom Jesus’ authority as the Son of God yields powerful manifestations of God’s kingdom power. The blind see. The lame walk. The temple is reclaimed as a house of prayer. People return to God. Even the fig withers at his rebuke.

The chief priests and elders rightly understand that power is properly an outgrowth of authority. Sadly, however, they rejected Jesus’ authority, denied his power, and forfeited his blessings.

Before Jesus ascended he gave the Great Commission, the first words of which are, “All authority in heaven and on earth have been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18-20) Today whenever we align ourselves with Jesus’ will and authority we have power to further the cause of Christ’s kingdom. Not only do we acknowledge his authority, we experience and express his power for our and others’ blessing.
