Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 9:32-34

As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to [Jesus]. 33And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” 34But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”

There are times when we ought to marvel, we ought to stand in awe. A beautiful mountain vista merits our pause to appreciate their grandeur and majesty, their testimony to the creative power of God.  Too often, however, we are so busy that we don’t stop to notice the remarkable, marvelous and awesome things around us.

Sometimes, furthermore, even when we do see marvelous things we are skeptical; we’ve been deceived too often. Things are made to look marvelous which are not. We’ve looked behind the movie set. We’ve seen the doorways built smaller to make the leading men look larger than life. Blue screen special effects dazzle, but we know they’re not the real thing.

Jesus’ gift of words to a man who could not speak was a source of wonder and marveling for the people who saw it happen. They realized that they were seeing a once-in-history kind of miracle. We need not open our hearts to every slight-of-hand trick that comes into view. But to stop and see what God actually is doing is a worthy calling. As the psalmist says, “This is the Lord’s doing; and it is marvelous in our eyes.” (Psalm 118:23)
