Luke 2:34-35 (ESV)
And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

Too often we think of destiny as something out of a Hollywood action movie. It’s swashbuckling, bigger than life and nearly unattainable for all but the greatest hero. But all the swashbuckling and rescuing of the silver screen is but a pale reflection of Christ’s rescue of our sinful and fallen world.
Simeon tells Mary and Joseph that the child Jesus is appointed (read destined) for the falling and rising of many in Israel: a sign to be spoken against. His destiny would be played out in such a way, furthermore, that Mary’s heart would be broken: she would see her son die.
But just as we must look beyond the manger, swaddling clothes, and merely human realities of Jesus’ birth and life, we must also see beyond Jesus’ death to the victory of faith He won on the cross: Jesus never gave way to unbelief or distrust in God. He never lost faith in God, and now sits enthroned at the right hand of God.
Our destiny is inextricably tied to Christ; no matter what the world around us looks like. He is exalted. He has caused the falling and rising of many. He has won the victory over sin, death and the devil and will on the Last Day come to judge the living and the dead.
We who are his are destined for glory – to the praise of His glorious grace. This is no fatalistic surrender to our inevitable doom. This is a glorious calling and gift of God.
