Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 5:13-16

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

"You are the salt of the earth." (Matthew 5:13)
"You are the salt of the earth." (Matthew 5:13)

Jesus’ declaration about His disciples being salt and light is a challenging truth. This is not an imperative, or a command, but it requires something of us if we actually do believe Jesus’ words.

Too often Christians fade into the background of life and politics. We are content to let others make the news, get the attention, and be the center of controversy. We don’t want to make waves.

Indeed, Jesus does say, “Blessed are the meek…” So, perhaps we ought not to force our way to center stage. Humility, too, is a a virtue. But our calling as Christians does not require becoming doormats for Jesus. In fact, Jesus says that His disciples are the ones who season the earth and enlighten world.

More on that tomorrow; but for now, let’s embrace the truth that we have been declared by the Son of God to be salt and light. Somehow we must “get ourselves into the game” and have the impact that Jesus intends for His disciples to have.

Where is it today that God wants you to take the lid off your light? Where does the season of God’s truth and grace need to be added? How can you be a positive influence at work, school, or home?
