And the shepherds went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.

Walter Wangerin tells a story about an empty manger at his church’s Christmas Eve service. His daughter played the part of Mary in the pageant, and came to the conclusion about way that Jesus came down from heaven to a manger and back up to heaven on the first Easter. If that was so, a beloved shut-in lady to whom the children had sung and who had died the day before, would also go back to God in heaven. Mary had taken the baby doll out of the manger to make the point that just as the manger is empty, so will our tombs be one day.
Thankfully on that first Christmas, the manger was not empty. When the shepherds went to see the thing that has happened that the Lord had made known to them Jesus was very much in the manger. It wouldn’t be Christmas without the baby in Bethlehem’s manger.
My Blue Christmas image is two images in one. One is of our Willow Tree nativity set’s Mary and her child. The other is the exterior of a downtown Houston skyscraper. It reflected the beautiful blue sky on the day I took the photo. By putting it as an overlay (with the lines of the windows becoming a sort of cage, keeping Jesus from us) I was trying to convey the idea that the world does its best to keep Jesus from us and us from Jesus.
But just as Jesus shines through that particular image, so Jesus comes to us. He is not bound. Nor are we prevented from coming to him. As we celebrate Christmas, may the joy, peace, hope, and love of God fill our hearts.
Even if the manger is empty today, it wasn’t empty that first Christmas. God came to us. He is Christ the Lord. Glory to God in the highest. Peace on earth and good will toward those with whom he is well pleased. Joy to the world! Christ the Savior is born.
