Ezekiel 16:62
I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall know that I am the Lord.
Colossians 1:5–6
You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God.

In the movie Martin Luther – Heretic, Luther is portrayed in his crisis of conscience with his father confessor, Johann von Staupitz, who advises him, “Eat more food. Get more sleep. Learn more about God.” Such was good advice for the young monk who threw himself into the study of God’s word, and learned things about God he had not encountered previously. It literally changed the world.
Sometimes we may underply the importance of knowing things about God. We put it off as mere head knowledge when people know about God, but don’t live out that knowledge in any meaningful way. We talk about people knowing but not doing good. Knowledge without wisdom or application is not worth much. Not knowing, however, is worse. And knowledge about God can expand the strength and impact of our faith – just is it did with Martin Luther some 500 years ago.
Such knowledge about God is powerful because it leads us to hope, and hope shapes the trajectory of one’s life and works its way out in ways that bless others and glorify God. So if you’re short on hope, struggling with guilt, stuck in a rut, anxious about tomorrow, discouraged or worried about anything, learn more about God. Study his word. Press in to the word of truth. Meditate on the Good News of Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, ascension, and second coming.
