Light from the Word and through the lens

Mark 6:18-20

For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.

My high school friend Jerry offered me the truth in a word of advise that I took to heart. “You just can’t do that Dave.” He was right and I knew it. In this case the issue wasn’t nearly as dramatic as John’s confrontation of Herod and Herodias. Nor was I perplexed. I didn’t hear him gladly but I heard Jerry and changed my actions. It was a call to truth and a better path.

Sometimes we may do much the same as Herod. We know that we are hearing truth. We know we should follow the ethical path – or even turn away from a pet sin. But we stay our own willful course and merely flirt with the truth of a better way.

The results of Herod’s hesitation between two opinions was profoundly destructive (see Mark 6:21-28). Because he couldn’t lose face before his guests so Herod orders John’s execution. John is beheaded. The events surrounding Jesus’ ministry that will lead to his execution begin to align. And because Herod’s conscience is seared by this foolish vow and more foolish actions, there is little chance that he will turn to Christ even though such a move would literally save him.

When we hear the truth of God’s word there is only one move: repent and believe the gospel. That’s Jesus’ message (Mark 1:14-15). That is the way of life. We cannot merely flirt with the truth. We must embrace it. Thanks be to God that Jesus is the Truth of God and is the embodiment also of the Good News of God’s saving grace!
