Luke 2:21
And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

There are those who have trouble with the name of Jesus. It’s not so often that they dislike him, or even that they wish to remain anonymous Christians. It’s just that for some, the name Jesus is embarrassing. They will pray in Christ’s name. They will even say that they are Christians. But it take the name of Jesus is just a bit too personal – too much a reminder of Sunday School. It’s not mature. We can have a Savior to be sure, but to name him Jesus is uncomfortable.
The reality of our Savior, however, is that he has a name. It was given him by instruction of an angel. It was given to him at his circumcision – at eight days of age. And it means “The Lord Saves.” Perhaps it would be easier if we took Jesus’ Hebrew name: Yeshua, or the Greek equivalent: Joshua. Somehow that seems more manly; less immature.
But make no mistake about this: this eight-day-old baby will grow to be a real man, and to take his name on our lips is no exercise in immaturity weakness. Real men call him Jesus, for at this name every knee will bow and every tongue confess: Jesus is Lord. He may not look like it now, but his ministry of redemption from manger to grave is the substance of his Lordly work.
Jesus is Lord because he is our redeemer. He rules by grace and he is not ashamed to call us by our names. So let us call him by name, gladly and thankfully, realizing just what that means. Jesus is our Lord; our redeemer; our Savior.
