Hebrews 11:1-3
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
Some make faith an intellectual embrace of dusty religious assertions. Some make faith a magic carpet to ride to never-never land. Some make faith a free ticket to trouble-free living. God intends faith to be the WOW-factor of life.
There are truths we embrace by faith to be sure: creation being just one. There is the hope of the resurrection which is embraced and held dear by faith. There is the promise of God’s help in times of trouble that we look to in faith. But these opening words of Hebrews 11 are the prelude to a symphony of extraordinary lives shaped by faith.
If we make our daily decisions based on hopes and convictions born of God’s goodness and promises we are in for an adventure. It may mean that we forego a worldly pleasure in anticipation of a heavenly blessing. It may mean that we face a challenge with a new courage. Faith will move us to forgive an enemy in hopes of a better relationship tomorrow. By faith we will love a neighbor in appreciation of God’s love. We will face down temptation and remain true to God’s truth by faith.
If your faith life is dull and boring, perhaps you are in a wilderness season of life. But perhaps if our faith life is dull and boring we may not be bringing our faith to bear on all of life’s challenges, opportunities, purposes, and pursuits. Perhaps you need to raise your hopes and convictions so that they are more intentionally part of your daily existence.
