Hebrews 7:26
For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
Sometimes the subtlety of Scriptural truth is lost on me. I can read a passage such as this and gloss right over the glaring reality of the two words, “indeed” and “fitting.” Indeed: in other words underline the thought. In fact. Truly. Really? Really. We must stop and consider the reality of what is to follow.
Jesus fits our need – our real, urgent, most significant need. Barnes says it well: Jesus was “suited to our condition. That is, there was that in our character and circumstances which demanded that a high priest for us should be personally holy.” He needed great power. Ne needed to be superior to the Old Testament priesthood. We need a Savior who is holy, innocent, unstained, different from sinners, exalted above the heavens. We have such a high priest in the person of our Lord Jesus. He is indeed fitting to our need.
Therein lies the challenge. Either we are so consumed with our own guilt that we dispair of God’s grace and believe our sin is so shameful that we cannot possibly be forgiven, or we shrug off our sin as a little thing, and despise the grace of God. Neither requires a high priest of any kind.
But these two words point us toward our absolute need for a Savior and the absolute confidence we have in Jesus to forgive our most horrible sin. Jesus doesn’t just fit into a corner of our lives; he fits into the center of our eternal need and provides the unequalled access to the throne of God’s grace for which I am eternally thankful!
