Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 6:9, 13

 Pray then like this:

“Lead us not into temptation.”

What if we were actively to seek the guidance of God – not only when we are facing a difficult decision, but also on a daily basis? Wayne is one who had a “Kairos moment” (see below) or defining moment when God spoke into his life and changed his world. He was at a prison where inmates were giving their cardboard testimonies. One would say – on one side of the piece of cardboard, “Convicted felon”. The inmate would turn over his sign and reveal, “Redeemed father” on the other side. A woman would walk up with a sign that read, “Prostitute” on one side. On the other side she would show the words, “Restored mother”. As he watched this parade, he realized he had a sign as well. On one side would read, “Saved by Grace” on the other side of his sign, however, he would have written on that day, “Un-used Asset”. That was a defining moment!

What would our lives look like if we called on God to reveal what would be on our sign today? Where might he lead and guide us today? Most of us don’t have dramatic “felon to new life” testimonies. But many of us could write, “Aloof & Unmoved by others’ needs” on one side and, one day hopefully: “A Fully-Engaged Agent of God’s Love” on the other. We could have an “On the Bench to In the Game” testimony if we were to hear God calling us and respond in faith.

The New Testament and Old Testament describes significant moments in time as “kairos” moments. At the time of Jesus, there were two common words to denote time in the ancient Greek language: kairos and chronosKairos is used to highlight an extremely significant event in time, while chronos, from which the world chronology is related, describes a span of time—boring waiting in line sort of time.
