Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 6:9-12

 Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
12
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.

I didn’t see it coming as I sat in bed, away on retreat. I was journaling that evening before I went to sleep, reflecting on forgiveness. I didn’t see the heresy coming but it came nonetheless. For whatever reason God let me live many years unaware of my personal heresy of which I have now repented.

I don’t have trouble forgiving others; at least that’s what I’ve always claimed. It seems to be true. I don’t hold grudges. But that night the Holy Spirit revealed to me that I was refusing to forgive God. That is the supreme heresy! God has done nothing wrong. God needs no forgiveness. But somehow I had been holding grudges against God for allowing, causing, or failing to prevent all the bad things that had happened in my life. And I was bitter and resentful against him. It was as thought I was holding God hostage for his faults.

In that moment I sought God’s forgiveness. And even now I treasure Jesus’ words on the cross, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.” The Good News is that God is a forgiving God. He has forgiven our sins. Our great debt has been cancelled. We forgive for we have been forgiven. That is a gift that is a great treasure to share.
