Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 6:8-9

Do not be like [the Gentile], for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.  Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…give us this day our daily bread…forgive…lead…deliver us…”

We gathered for prayer yesterday morning and evening around the flag poles at St. John Lutheran Church. Our National Day of Prayer observance was doubly two-fold. We prayed for our nation and her leaders at 6:30 a.m. and p.m. Then we went for prayer walks in our neighborhoods – led by several of us. The group I led went to a nearby shopping area and prayed for God’s blessings on the shop owners, the businesses, safety for the employees, and even for the owners – that they would find tenants for their empty spaces.

I’m not certain how others felt about this experience – though the strong sense I got was that the whole event was well received. But upon further reflection, I’m wondering how often I simply go through the motions of prayer rather than praying from the heart and expecting God to answer my prayers. I say this to my shame.

So today, as I start my morning in this time of meditation and prayer, I ask God to forgive me for prayers that are unadorned with faith-filled expectation. I ask God to hear my feble prayers – crippled as they often are with little faith. I ask God to help me see with the eyes of faith how his name is honored when God’s people pray. I ask that God would provide the daily bread for those store owners and operators, employees, and our community as a whole. And I – in faith – look for a good report.

What happens when God’s people pray? Might God answer? How will you look for that answer today?
