Light from the Word and through the lens

Ephesians 5:13-14

But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,

“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

How does that work? How does a sleeper arise from the dead? How can someone who is dead to God, to goodness, to truth, to grace, and to love awaken? How can anyone who is dead wake up?

Faith in Jesus Christ is a gift of the Holy Spirit. That is a profound truth. But God doesn’t just zap people as they are riding the freeway in their early morning commute. He doesn’t flip a magic switch as they click on an ad for an oil change or day at the spa. Most of us give little thought to our former deadness, and those who are apart from Christ are unaware of their own deadness. He brings us to faith by the power of the Holy Spirit through his word.

When God created Adam and Eve he did so out of the dust of the earth. The Bible says that he breathed into their nostrils the breath of life and they became living beings. Lumps of clay became living beings when God’s breath inspired them. When God breathes his word into peoples’ souls they come to life as well.

Somewhere along your life’s path someone spoke God’s word to you. You heard it and believed. You were awakened; Christ is shining on you. Maybe you know someone who needs to be awakened to God’s presence, goodness, life, and grace. What word of God might you speak by which God awakens that one for whom Jesus dies and on whom Jesus would shine?
