Read Psalm 78

It’s a long psalm. And it’s somewhat discouraging as a descriptor of Israel’s lack of faithfulness. God’s faithfulness and the truth of his ways, however, are on clear display.
The saga of Israel’s failure to honor God on a consistent basis and God’s punishment and call to repentance is not mere history. This is an object lesson pointing to our need for a Savior whose righteousness shines brightly in the darkest hours of testing. It is also testimony to God’s love for his people.
If God did not love Israel, he would have simply let them go their own way – all the way to destruction. And just as he did not give up on Israel, he does not give up on us. He disciplines us, calling us back to himself. He urges us to faith and good works. When we sin, we put ourselves on a path to destruction. Only in faithfulness to God is there life. So when God disrupts our path, and calls us back to himself – by whatever means – he is showing great love.
The greatest show of love is God’s Son, and his perfect righteousness, faithfulness, and obedience. He shines bright against the darkness of our sin, and as a beacon of hope when we are tempted. We may marvel at Israel’s failure to follow God as they should. But we should marvel even more at Jesus’ sacrifice and the gift of salvation he gives.
