We are in Pawleys Island, South Carolina for a conference on discipleship and missional communities. The insights and challenges are profound and far-reaching. This is no kindergarten faith experience by a long shot. As we study Jesus’ methods and ways we are growing deeper in our faith.
But all this starts when we – as little children – grasp the grace of God by faith and recognize his goodness and grace in Jesus. These little children cry out, “Hosanna!” They recognize that Jesus is the Son of David, and worthy of praise.
So really, there are two miracles here: the blind and lame are healed, and children praise the One who performs the miracle and even name him as the Son of David. We may indeed grow deep in the faith and gain profound insights into the mission of God and deeper insights about discipleship. Well and good. But we must never forget the miracle that faith itself is.
God has ordained praise “from the mouths of infants and nursing babies.” Thank God for the miracle of faith that brings praise to their lips and ours!
Matthew 21:14-17
14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, 16and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read,
“‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies
you have prepared praise’?”
17And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.
