Give glory to God: that’s our calling as God’s people. We are not made to stand alone, to do it according to our own standard, to fill our lives and hearts with things pleasing to the eye, good for fruit, and desirable for gaining wisdom (cf. Genesis 3:6). We are called to give glory to God. There is, in fact, a grave danger of failing to do so (check out Acts 12:23).

John 15:8
By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
The first and great commandment of God is, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” (Deuteronomy 6:5) As Jesus speaks to his disciples about being united with the vine he makes his premise clear: we are called to glorify God. We glorify God as we must love him first and most and love our neighbor as ourselves. That is how our Father in heaven is glorified.
Thank God for the power and strength we receive as we abide in Jesus’ love and stay connected to him who is the true vine!
I was taught early on to avoid “salad sermons”: those sermons filled with “let us…” Jesus’ message here is call to repentance and faith: “Glorify God. Bear fruit. Prove yourselves to be my disciples.” That’s no salad sermon!
