Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 11:16-19

16“But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,
17“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ 18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”

For some people any excuse will do. He doesn’t like to go into the city; that’s why they never go out. She doesn’t like crowds; they don’t go to church. The church is full of hypocrites;  he rejects the Christian faith.

We need a true north – one that doesn’t move or fail to shine bright. We need a rock that is higher than the streams of life. We need a Savior who will tell it like it is.

There will always be those who are disappointed, and who will criticize Jesus, Christians, and the church for one reason or another. Excuses abound. But Jesus stands against the backdrop of the shifting sands of political expediency, chaotic immorality, relativism, and faithlessness. He is our True North.

Invitation and challenge: Jesus’ life and teachings are filled with both. Rather than look for excuses to criticize and reject Jesus’ teachings we rejoice even in the challenging words he offers us. May we heed his invitation and take up his challenge. Such wisdom will be proved to be worthy.
