Ephesians 4:14-16
Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

We’re in Pawleys Island, South Carolina for a church conference – seven of us from St. John Lutheran Church in Cypress, Texas. Five staff (four from the church, and one from the school), together with Rusty Collins (acting chairman for our school board), and Diane Bahn (in relation to her work with PLI). We’re here to learn about “UP – IN – OUT” discipleship: a balanced life that relates to God as his child, others as brothers and sisters in Christ, and the world as emissaries of God’s love in Christ.
I’m thankful for the opportunity to be here, for the teaching of Mike Breen (3-D Ministries), and for the staff that God has gathered together at St. John. The biggest challenge to growth, however, is not doing more, but doing less: growing deeper rather than wider. If we are to grow up in Christ (who modeled the perfect balance of the “UP – IN – OUT”) we must ultimately allow God to prune us and remove the extraneous things that distract us from the mission of God.
Perhaps this is not only a challenge for churches but for each of us as disciples of Jesus Christ. We too easily get distracted by all the activities and distractions around us. Not all of these are evil; some are good and even godly pursuits. But as Jim Collins says, “Good is the enemy of Great.” And God wants us to be great by ridding ourselves of everything that distracts us from loving Christ and serving our neighbor.
What might you need to give up today in order better to follow Jesus’ call?
