Light from the Word and through the lens

John 14:23

Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”

What if God said He loved us but did nothing to show it? Would that make any difference to us? If God claimed to love us but never heard our prayer, never provided for our needs, never gave us his blessings; only talked about His love: would that be of any benefit? Would that love be real?

Talk is cheap; it’s easy to say the right words. But, if you really love someone you will show it in your actions. In fact love is an active verb, not simply an expression of feelings. Because God loves us He acts in our behalf. He comes to earth as a baby. He lays Himself in a manger. He teaches, heals, confronts, comforts, and blesses people: all because that’s what it means to love.

If we have been touched by God’s love we will love Him back; not simply with words and feelings, but in real, active, and outward ways. Jesus says that if we love Him we will keep His word. That means we will ponder, meditate on, and hold God’s word dear in our hearts. It means, also, that we will do what Jesus commands us to do.

The clearest expression of keeping Jesus’ words – in an outward manner – is to love one another. Today you will have opportunity to express your love for Jesus by showing your love to your neighbor. Perhaps that is a co-worker. Maybe it is your husband. Possibly it will be a friend. No matter who God brings into your life today, you can show your love for Him by loving that person.
