2 Corinthians 5:14-15
For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

Many people live oblivious to the powers and influences that move them through the course of life. An experience of abandonment in childhood, a frightening encounter as a teenager, a traumatic event in the past: these sometimes obviously impact us. To some degree or another our hearts are shaped by these and other happenings. Often, however, there are other things that control us: an underlying fear of failure, a need to be seen as successful, a desire to look attractive, or any number of other things can shape and guide our actions, or urge and direct our plans.
Then there is the matter of sin. Selfishness, greed, self-serving fear, laziness, and the darker motives are always expressing themselves in our lives. How shall we find a path of life in the darkness of these blinding forces?
There shines a light from the cross of Christ. It is the light of his sacrificial, unconditional love. Christ gave himself for us and was raised again from the dead. Our destiny in him is life in abundance now and in eternity. His love for the whole world is a powerful force for good. When we live in that love and conscientiously seek to live for him our lives are better – and so are the lives of those around us. When this love takes hold in our lives, we have a better urging; we are better guided than when we run on the cruise control of our own needs.
Prayer: Your love is far-reaching, Lord Jesus. It reaches to me and through me to others. Compel me forward according to your purposes, and help me to live for you; for you died for me and rose again that I might live for you. Amen.
