Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 4:1-4

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4But he answered,  “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

I just learned a number last Thursday that makes me very sad: there are 3500 churches in the greater Houston area. Why does that make me sad? Do the math. The average church today has a Sunday attendance of less than 100. Even if that’s not true in Houston, and the average church is double that size (believe me, it’s not!), that would mean that less than 20% of the people of Houston will be in worship on any given Sunday. And that’s being very optimistic.

But of us few: how else are we different? What would be our hallmark? How would we want to set ourselves apart? I pray that you will be in worship this morning – wherever you are. And I pray that you go from that encounter with God different for it.

Jesus said that we don’t live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Dear God, shape me by Your word so that my life each day will reflect the grace and truth that we celebrate together today as Your people in worship. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
