Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 3:15
Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.

There comes a time when we simply must give in to God. We may not understand what He is asking us to do. We may not grasp any value in the act. But God calls us to do it. It may not even be all that difficult.  But we know we are to do it.

We are told to pray. Well and good. But how does that work? How could it be that my few (or many) word could impact the course of the universe? We are told to be kind to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Not too difficult most of the time. But what difference does it make? The list could go on. But as in the case of John, we sometimes simply must do what God calls us to do.

Diane and I were talking about shortcuts this morning (on the way to the airport). Life is more than just a trip to the airport; and following Christ is not a matter of finding the easiest way to get from point a to point b. In fact, the abundant life of faith in Jesus is all about letting Him define our path and enjoying His presence and guidance along the way. While en route we may think it easier or more advisable to take a different and shorter route. But if we do, we will miss a greater blessing.

John baptized Jesus. And because he did, he saw the Holy Spirit descend in the form of a dove and heard the voice from heaven. He became a part of a greater story than that moment in the waters of the Jordan River. He became part of the story of God’s redemption.

Today is a good day to reflect on the simple things God asks you to do, do them, and look for the larger story of God’s plan in your life.

My brother, I love the journey metaphor! Jesus is, after all, the WAY. I love the idea that Jesus is defining my path…yes, and His presence in it is so comforting.

    Thanks brother for your thoughts.

Well my Dear Friend, you gave me a meaty bone to chew on today – either that or I am confused AGAIN! Every time I obey God, it makes a difference. Pray – my words don’t really make a difference, but God answering prayer does. The difference may just be in the blessing I receive from praying. Forgive – the difference can be in the forgiven (I’m thinking of human forgiveness) but for sure the one doing the forgiving makes a difference in their life. When I sing I believe it makes a difference by enhancing worship for people – for sure glorifying God with music makes a difference in me. Obeying God enhances my JOY, EXCITEMEMT, PEACE, etc. I’m not saying anything new to you – these are just my thoughts as I read your reflections. My thoughts about short cuts – Life is not a destination it is a journey and I don’t want to take short cuts and miss any of the blessings. Thank you, Pastor Bahn. I love you so much. Keep the meaty bones coming and I will keep chewing on them!
