John 4:10
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
Gifts are difficult for some people to give and for others to receive. For some finding the right gift is just too difficult; they don’t really know what the other person wants. Others are embarrassed to receive anything from anyone else; or hesitant to receive the gift because to do so will put them in debt to others. Some folks, too, are just plain hard to please. Others don’t really care what they give: they’ll give what they want and the recipient will surely like it!
God’s gift is different in all ways. His gift is the gift of life – we all need that; it’s essential to our being. His gift is gracious and not self-motivated – He needs nothing from us; not even our appreciation.
Once I gave my sister a set of giant checkers for her birthday. Truth is: I wanted that set of checkers; I gave her what I wanted rather than what she did! Once I gave my wife a less-than-romantic/thoughtful gift on Mother’s Day (I know she’s not my mother!). Once I received some tulip bulbs from my mom for my birthday (I was not impressed!). But God never gives us the wrong thing. If ever we do not appreciate His gifts, the fault is ours, not His.
This flower was one flower from a bouquet given to Nici (our daughter-in-law) when she was at MD Anderson in Houston. It is now my gift to you; a blurred version that speaks of a truth of any gift from one mortal to another: It is all fleeting. Whatever we give and receive will not last. But God’s gift of eternal life through Jesus’ death and resurrection from the grave will last forever. It is not fleeting. It is eternal, and eternally good. May the name of the Lord be praised!
