David Bahn – Reflections

Light from the Word and through the lens

Nici_3a

Nicole Bahn has come through surgery and the results of the process are very encouraging. Here’s a brief overview of what happened today in her 4-year-long battle with colorectal cancer. A previous cementoplasty proved to be ineffectual in stablizing a degenerated vertebrae. This 7 hour surgery was an apparently successful attempt to stablize her back and bring some (much, hopefully) pain relief. Here’s a brief overview of her current situation from Matt, our son and her husband:

June 12, 2009 – 4 p.m.
Hello from Houston!

Nici’s surgery yesterday went very well. It lasted until about 9:00pm, so all told, she was in surgery about 7 hours. The neurosurgeon was very pleased. He was able to be a bit aggressive with removing tumor from Nici’s spine and was able to reduce the pressure placed on her nerve roots. He then placed a few rods and screws into the back which were able to stabilize her spine and remove some of the compression pressure off of her back. She is already able to move her left leg a bit more than before, which is a bit sooner than anticipated by the surgeons. After the neurosurgeon was done, a plastic surgeon was able to cover the hardware with some back muscle. This was done because it reduces the occurance of some of the more common complications of the surgery. He was also very pleased with how things went. All in all, it was a smooth surgery.

She is now resting in the ICU. Her mom and I have been able to visit her most of the day today, and she is actually going to be moved to a regular room as soon as one is available. She is in good spirits and not in too much pain, all things considered. She’s got at least 5 more days in the hospital as an inpatient, then probably 2 to 3 weeks of physical and occupational therapy. So, it looks like Houston will be home for the next little while. Thank you all for your prayers and support during this time, keep em coming! There are still a few more tests and health issues that need to be addressed while we are here, however, those will be done next week. I’ll send an update on things when there is more to tell.
