Light from the Word and through the lens

Isaiah 11:6-10

The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
    and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
    and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze;
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
    and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den.
They shall not hurt or destroy
    in all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

10 In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

Imagine a Christmas party where Hillary Clinton sits with Rand Paul, Donald Trump enjoys conversation with Bernie Sanders. Promoters of the Keystone Pipeline engage in congenial interaction with members of the Sierra Club, and American Civil Liberties Union members interact with National Rifle Association members. Republican, Democrat, Tea Party, Libertarians, Socialists, and Anarchists no longer divided, accusing, condemning, or undercutting: That would be a miracle. That would be heaven. That would the the perfect rule and reign of God.

There is only one way that will ever happen, and it has nothing to do with political, economic, social, or legal solutions. It won’t be voted in. It won’t be won by a war to end all wars. It will be established when God chooses to end all the fighting, war, bloodshed, immorality, destruction, and sin on earth and reveal to all the triumph of his Son Jesus Christ.

On that day Christ shall stand as a signal for all peoples – all ethnic groups, nations, tribes, languages, peoples, and classes will see that the way of faith and fear and love for God is the only way to life. The root of Jesse – whom we know to be Jesus – will be our focus, joy, hope, salvation, and peace. That was promised 2750 years ago by Isaiah. It was seen for a while in the life and ministry of Jesus. It will be fully experienced on the Great Last Day and in the life of the world to come.

Come Lord Jesus!
