Light from the Word and through the lens

Romans 11:32-36

For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord,
or who has been his counselor?”
35 “Or who has given a gift to him
    that he might be repaid?”

36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Sometimes peoples’ motives are veiled so well, that we do not even see how they intend to help or harm us. As one of my favorite Proverbs (27:6) says, “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.” Friends will tell you the truth – even when it hurts. Enemies glad hand and otherwise try to butter you up so that they can stick the dagger into your heart – just when you’re least expecting it. I’ve known both kinds of people and I greatly appreciate the former.

With God, however, there is not only no ulterior motive, there is a great storehouse of grace and favor awaiting all who would recognize their need and seek his mercy and love. Paul concludes this section of Romans with what seems to be an almost ecstatic expression of glory and praise to God. Having spoken at length about the future disposition of the Jewish people, he makes the point that God’s ultimate goal is to show grace to all people.

I believe the key to the meaning of the universe is found in the phrase from Ephesians 1:6, “to the praise of his glorious grace…in Christ Jesus.” Paul has apparently caught the scent of that grace as it wafts by on the reality of God’s glory and goodness. He extols God. How about you? Ought this be a “Yay God” moment as you consider his loving grace to you?
