Psalm 10:12-18
Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand;
forget not the afflicted.
13 Why does the wicked renounce God
and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”?
14 But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation,
that you may take it into your hands;
to you the helpless commits himself;
you have been the helper of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer;
call his wickedness to account till you find none.
16 The Lord is king forever and ever;
the nations perish from his land.
17 O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear
18 to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed,
so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.
I don’t believe that I’m the only one who can hardly fathom how three women and a child could be kept hidden for 10 years, isolated from each other and only having left the house in which they were held prisoners twice! I cannot imagine what vile thoughts and schemes were used against these women. But I can understand the sentiments, thoughts, and desires expressed in this psalm against such evil! We yearn for justice in such cases as these.
On the other hand, I can answer the question, “Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, ‘You will not call to account?’” It is because evil seems so often and so long to go unpunished. People get away with terrible things. I would not surprise me if the men who held these women hostage got off on some technicality or were able to plead insanity – or at least not get what they deserve. Too often evil seems to go unpunished and unaccounted for.
But in fact that is not the case. Evil will not prevail. The Lord is king forever and ever. He strengthens the heart of the afflicted. He brings justice to the fatherless and the oppressed. There will come a time when man will strike terror no more.
At least now these women have been freed from their terrorized existence. Justice may come through the courts. But justice will certainly come from God. God will not be mocked. Sometimes that truth must sustain us in the face of evil, oppression and injustice. For in this fallen world injustice and affliction too often seem to go unanswered.
