Light from the Word and through the lens

Psalm 34:1-3

I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!

There is a sad joke about getting rid of a group of bats that had taken up residence in the belfry of a church. After trying several methods – none of which were successful – a pastor hit upon this idea: “Just confirm them; you’ll never see them again!” All too sad in some cases. We will confirm 24 young people tomorrow at St. John. They have come through a three-year confirmation instruction process: one year of Old Testament, one year of New Testament, and one year of Luther’s Small Catechism.

The psalm above encapsulates the kind of Christian life I would hope for all people. It is one of praise for God; kindness and humility before him and others, and a call to live together in praise of him. This we call, “celebrating, living, and sharing the abundant life of Jesus.”

We celebrate God’s goodness in establishing his relationship with us by his love (“I will bless the Lord”). We live together (“let us exalt his name together“) in a community of love. We share that love with others in lives of humility (“magnify the Lord with me”).

Notice this is not a single occurrence (“at all times”)! Such is my prayer for these 24 young men and women. I pray that they celebrate, live, and share Jesus’ gift of abundant eternal life each day!
