Light from the Word and through the lens

Luke 1:46-49

And Mary said,

“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.

Nativity (13 of 50)

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is on of the great heroes of the Bible and of our salvation. She bore the Son of God. She raised him – along with Joseph – and was involved in Jesus’ life from his birth to his circumcision, to his first miracle at Cana, to his preaching ministry, to his death and his resurrection. Here she says that all generations will call her blessed.

Some people use the adjective “Reverend” as a title. Some will call me, simply, “Reverend.” I don’t much like the term to begin with, but beyond that it is properly an adjective, and the way it is actually to be used is, “the Reverend…” indicating that it is descriptive of one’s character.

The same seems to be true of the term “Blessed Virgin Mary.” It’s as though “Blessed” is her title, rather than an adjective – a word that describes Mary. The worst part of it is that the term “Blessed” as used often serves to put Mary up on a shelf. She becomes a marbleized version of herself: someone to be admired, as though there is something about her nature that deserves attention and honor.

Mary’s comment, however, puts this notion away. All generations will call her blessed because, “for he who is mighty has done great things for me.” We may not have the privilege that Mary did of bearing the Son of God. But we are blessed by God through this Child. We may not be known 50 years from now, but the Mighty One has done great things for us. His name is holy. We do well to magnify him in our souls each day.
