Light from the Word and through the lens

Luke 1:46-48

And Mary said,

“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote to his parents from prison during Advent of 1943. He wrote from prison and makes a stunning observation:

“From the Christian point of view, spending Christmas in a prison doesn’t pose any special problem. Most likely, a more meaningful and authentic Christmas is celebrated here by many people than in places where only the name of the feast remains. … Christ was born in a stable because there was no room for him in the inn: A prisoner can understand that better than other people. It’s truly good news for him…

Another translation of Mary’s song has, “for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden.” Somehow this speaks to me today differently than at other times. To think that God does regard us – high or low – is a stunning thought. The mayor of a large city may speak about his regard for people, but actually to regard a particular man or woman would slow the gears of politics to a stand-still. But the King of the universe regards us, he takes note of us.

This is reason for repentance and joy. We repent of our disregard of God and his ways and laws. We rejoice that God still regards us all. We may look with contempt upon the poor and weak. We may forget God. But he never forgets us. He has looked us over; he has seen us. And his look is one of grace, love, and redemption.

This is good news to all who celebrate Christmas – whether in prison or mansion – for God’s favor and salvation reaches to both. The only question is whether we who live in mansions (relative to the place of Jesus’ birth) will receive his grace.
