Light from the Word and through the lens

Psalm 18:25-31

With the merciful you show yourself merciful;
with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
26 with the purified you show yourself pure;
and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
27 For you save a humble people,
but the haughty eyes you bring down.
28 For it is you who light my lamp;
the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
29 For by you I can run against a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.
30 This God—his way is perfect;
the word of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

31 For who is God, but the Lord?

The recent presidential debate showcased two strongly opinionated, passionate and powerful men engaged in a spirited and sometimes acrimonious showdown. Pundits and spin doctors on both sides offered their conclusions as to why their man won. Even the actions of the moderator fell under scrutiny with charges and countercharges leveled and re-leveled. The only consistency in the spin wars were that each side said their man won.

The thoughts of Psalm 18 lead us toward an important truth: God shows himself to be all that we project upon him – only more so than we imagine. The crooked see God as tortuous. They will discover greater torture than they can ever imagine if they do not repent. Those who are merciful discover God’s greater mercy. Those who are blameless and pure discover the source of good conscience and holiness.

The key is humility. If we are humble before God we will discover a greater truth than if we rail against him for his inconsistencies and require that he give an account for his actions. Ask Job how that goes (Job 38-40) – not well by the way. Ultimately Job repented. The psalmist here has come to that place of peace found in humble faith.

Jesus’ first message was a simple call to repentance. In light of the presence of the Kingdom of God he called people to repent and believe the good news. Repentance is the change of mind that puts God in his proper place and us under him as his creatures. Faith embraces the truth of God’s word and takes refuge in God’s goodness. He is like no other. He always wins by the way. Those who align themselves with God will prevail – no spin required.
