Psalm 106:28-31
Then they yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor,
and ate sacrifices offered to the dead;
29 they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds,
and a plague broke out among them.
30 Then Phinehas stood up and intervened,
and the plague was stayed.
31 And that was counted to him as righteousness
from generation to generation forever.
We know better than to make faith simply a matter of believing the correct things about God. James (2:19) makes that clear, reminding us that demons believe that God is one (true!), but that they tremble in fear at that knowledge. Followers of Christ believe and confess that it is by faith alone that we are saved. But we also know that saving faith is never alone: works will always accompany our faith.
The mention of Phinehas in Psalm 106 as one who stood up and intervened (executing a couple who had defied and defiled Israel!). This act was honored and remembered for generations. Against the sins of idolatry and disobedience Phinehas acted to honor God and disavow the idolatry of other nations. His faith moved him to act.
But it is not simply the act of acting that shows our faith. The act of acting in alignment with God’s steadfast love is what matters. No idol has that kind of love. Only the King of kings, Lord of lords, God of creation, Father, Son and Holy Spirit has that kind of love, and it endures forever. God remembered us in our low estate, rescued us from our greatest foes: sin, death, and the devil, and provides for all our needs. He does this because of his steadfast love for which we give God thanks. His righteousness is reflected in every act of lovingkindness we offer or receive.
Psalm 136:23-26
It is he who remembered us in our low estate,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
24 and rescued us from our foes,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
25 he who gives food to all flesh,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
