Light from the Word and through the lens

Psalm 12:6

The words of the Lord are pure words,
like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times.

Many words were flying back and forth last night (10/11/12) at the vice presidential debates. A flurry of Twitter tweets flew into the blogosphere. The smirking and interrupting of Vice President Joe Biden was thought to be disrespectful by many. Some noted how often Congresman Paul Ryan took sips of water. Most people concluded that their guy did pretty well, and I heard two entirely different poll results as to who won the debate. But one thing is certain: there was and continues to be no absence of words.

Talk is cheap. So goes the saying. And with many people that is the case. From the rapper to the political spin-artist, talk is cheap; you can speak and never act. Such is the constant criticism of political talkers.

Not so with God. That’s because God’s words are pure. They contain no dross of untruth, no malice nor threat, no innuendo nor deceit. What God says is true. Absolutely true. Evil and untruth will ultimately collapse under its own weight; it cannot hold itself up. But pure truth stands.

God’s word has been purified “in the furnace” and “on the ground.” The furnace was the history of the world: perfectly created and hijacked into sin and rebellion. And in keeping with his word, God subjected the world to futility. But also kept his word in the ground of the cross, redeeming the world at the greatest cost imaginable through Jesus’ suffering and death.

What God says he does. That’s not always true of our political leaders. Sadly it’s not even always true of God’s people. That’s why we have a Savior, and why we should always seek to imitate him in what we say and what we do.
