Psalm 34:1-3
I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
There are times when our actions are worthy of imitation. There are times when they are not. Sometimes we rightly hide what we have done. Whether for shame, fear, or simply the need for privacy, sometimes we simply keep our actions private. But in this regard – praising, honoring, and glorifying God – we can be bold and public. This is a place where we may well say, “Imitate me as I follow Christ and honor God.”
This also points up the need for us to be in fellowship with one another in our praise of God. We are to “exult his name together!” We don’t do this alone. There may be a time for solitude and personal meditation. But when we go public with our faith and invite others to join us our praise is doubly strong.
That’s only partly because two people offering praise to God is twice as many as one person doing so (pure arithmetic). But there is also the bolstering of our personal faith by the addition of another. In fact it seems to me that as we add people to our praise and worship of God the strength and impact is exponential. Not only are there more voices; our voices are stronger, our faith grows more bold, the message is more richly proclaimed.
Today we are called to bless the Lord at all times. This brings joy to the humble and gladness to the hearts of those who know God’s lovingkindness, goodness, and faithfulness. It’s something we do, also, in the company of others and are even more richly blessed together!
