Light from the Word and through the lens

Psalm 61:1-2

Hear my cry, O God,
listen to my prayer;
from the end of the earth I call to you
when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock
that is higher than I,

Psalm 121:1-2

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

The hills of Israel as seen from Mount Carmel
The hills of Israel as seen from Mount Carmel

These two psalms speak of a need for help and remind me of my need to remember where the help truly is found. In the midst of a stormy sea we look for a safe haven – a “rock higher than I”. In the moments of attack and doom we look to the hills for allies and reinforcements.

But the second Psalm helps me understand a vitally important truth. The help does not come from the rock or the reinforcements. God is its source. We may look to the hills and rejoice when we see that help is on its way. We may experience a great sigh of relief when we find a safe haven in the storm. We may even kiss the ground when our plane lands safely. But God is behind all that. He is the source of our help. He is our salvation!

It’s easy to get distracted by the treasures and blessings that God brings to our lives. It’s easy to worship the created thing rather than the Creator. But our calling here is to remember God is the source of all good. He is the One who is our help and hope. The maker of heaven and earth is worthy of our praise. We fear, love and trust him above all things.
