Light from the Word and through the lens

Hebrews 13:1-16

Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Eleven years ago the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center twin towers and on the Pentagon shocked our nation. Nearly 3000 people lost their lives. Many tragic events unfolded that day. In the midst of those terrible events are stories of heroism and sacrifice. In the midst of those terror-filled hours are glimpses of good-spirited kindness and help.

Tucked into the list of commands at the beginning of Hebrews 13 is the statement that some have entertained angels without being aware of the fact. I’m imagining that many people on 9/11/01 considered the fire fighters and police officers to be angels.

Whether or not that is what is being spoken of here in Hebrews 13, there is an important truth behind the connection: Angels are not chubby-cheeked cherubs. They are in fact more like fire fighters and police officers in appearance and purpose. Angels in the Bible appear in human form (Genesis 18 for example), or in frightening appearance (Daniel 10). Their mission is to protect and serve. Their power flowing from the authority of God is mighty.

I don’t know how many angels disguised themselves as firefighters or police officers that day 11 years ago. But I do know this: angels watch over us, and sometimes cross our paths without our knowledge. That just might make us more apt to show hospitality to all people. That would be a good and godly thing to do.
