Light from the Word and through the lens

Hebrews 2:8-12

Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying,

“I will tell of your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”

Pain: The Gift Nobody Wants, by Paul Brandt and Philip Yancey is a powerful and insightful book. Published in 1999,  it is a challenging read. Few people think of pain as a gift, but almost no one desires pain – either as a gift or a burden.  Nevertheless Jesus was perfected through suffering. He has been honored because of his suffering. By Jesus’ suffering we have been forgiven and redeemed. The One who suffered calls us his brothers and sisters.

Jesus did all this because of his love for God and for us. He did it in full and perfect faith. He did it not seeing – in the fullness of his humanity – the full result of his work.

We are called to a like faith. We are to obey and serve God because of our love for God and our neighbor. We are to endure suffering, challenge, and difficulty in faith – trusting in the goodness and ultimate victory of God and his Kingdom. We are to press on even when we do not see the results – or even when we do not see how good can possibly come from our faithfulness. We show ourselves to be true sisters and brothers as we live in such a manner. That does not earn our salvation – Jesus already did that by his suffering and death. It simply is the manner in which our faith in Jesus is played out in this fallen world.

Pain may be the gift that nobody wants. Indeed. But through Jesus’ pain he was perfected. Through his suffering we have been brought to glory. The gift God gives by the pains Jesus endured is the give we all need and for which we join in singing God’s praise together with all the saints.
