Light from the Word and through the lens

Hebrews 2:5-9

For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere,

“What is man, that you are mindful of him,
or the son of man, that you care for him?
You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned him with glory and honor,
    putting everything in subjection under his feet.”

Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Psalm 150:6
Psalm 150:6

The best and most full expression of Jesus’ kingship is yet to come. But make no mistake: Jesus rules even now. He is exalted at the right hand of God. He tasted death for us all. He submitted himself to the whims and wiles of man. He suffered and died. But because of that – because he put himself under even the angels – he is exalted. We don’t yet fully see it, but he reigns nevertheless.

We do see glimpses of Jesus’ reign in the hearts of his people through acts of kindness and love. A woman drives cancer patients to treatment center. A man helps with a youth mission trip to the inner-city doing home repairs. A woman leads a team supporting worship and evangelistic outreach to homeless people. A husband forgives his wife. A son forgives his dad. Two women agree not to speak ill of each other. Sometimes it’s even more dramatic: a hardened unbeliever confesses Christ. A disease is healed miraculously.

But we still wait until the fullest expression of Jesus’ reign. That will be on the great Last Day when every knee shall bow to Jesus. Every tongue will confess him to be Lord. And we will be caught up in wonder, love, and praise, fully experiencing and expressing the joy of his salvation. We get a head-start on that today, gathering with fellow Christians and exalting the champion of our faith and the King of our salvation: Jesus.

with the Good News of Jesus’ salvation.  mission trip.
