Hebrews 1 (ESV)
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last dayshe has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
Psalm 1 speaks of the blessings of those who do not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, stand in the place of sinners, or sit in the seat of scoffers. There is a progression with these actions – from a casual and passing relationship to a lingering time standing in their presence. The ultimate manifestation of a wayward lifestyle is when someone sits down with those who conspire to do evil.
The significance of Jesus’ ascension is seen not only by the fact that he has ascended into heaven, but by his being seated at the right hand of God. Being seated implies fellowship, acceptance, and honor. Having a place at the table with those who are planning an undertaking means that you are part of shaping the plan. Being seated at the right hand of the powerful one means that you are fully trusted. It means, also, that you have the king’s ear. No one else is as close or as powerful as you.
We need not look elsewhere to find the power of God. No angel in the sky, no earthly potentate, no power broker will get us better connection with God. Only Jesus is seated at God’s side. The most amazing thing, however, is that Jesus invites us to come to the Father through him. We need not settle for seeking angels’ help. We need not go through any other advocate. We have access to God through the Son of God. He is not only superior, but readily available to all who call on him.
