Light from the Word and through the lens

Matthew 6:9-13

Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
12 and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

We might pray this prayer under the duress of a direct of evil in our lives. But if Barna is correct, few North American Christians believe that Satan is real; they would not believe it necessary to translate this petition of the Lord’s Prayer, “deliver us from the evil one.”

According to a Christianity Today article,

The majority of American Christians do not believe that Satan is a real being or that the Holy Spirit is a living entity, the latest Barna survey found.
Nearly six out of ten Christians either strongly agreed or somewhat agreed with the statement that Satan “is not a living being but is a symbol of evil,” the survey found.

Jesus knew better. He faced Satan down in the dessert after a 40 day and night fast. He saw Satan’s work in demon-possessed people. He even saw Satan at work in his own disciples (Matthew 16:21-23). Jesus says that the thief comes to steel, kill, and destroy; what better way to pull that off than to convince people he does not exist?

When we pray this prayer, ending with this petition, we are not just saying something nice and religious. We are not simply filling out a necessary number of words. We are not expressing a desire to be delivered from some contrived boogyman. We are asking God to deliver us from the terrible consequences of Satan’s ploys and destructive schemes. We are seeking to extract ourselves from the dominion of darkness, desiring, rather, to walk in the light of God’s grace and truth in Jesus.
