Light from the Word and through the lens

Some people say Mother’s Day and other such holidays are contrived by the greeting card companies and florists to sell cards and flowers. Others go to great lengths to make certain that they choose just the right card and get the most beautiful bouquet of flowers for Mom.

On the other hand it would be good if we simply took time to thank God for Mom, honored her, and let her know how much we love her on this special day. A card would be a good thing, too – you won’t make or break the greeting card industry by buying or not buying one card. Maybe lunch. Certainly worship. Maybe a neck rub. And flowers are a good thing as well.

But don’t let it be mere sentimentality. Let it be real. That might mean forgiving her from your heart for the bad things she did or the good she failed to do. It might also mean apologizing to her for the same kinds of things. It might be realizing that who you are was shaped by God through her, and by what you held onto or let go of. It might mean a quieter moment and prayer to God for her blessing. It might mean a moment of remembering now that her life on earth is ended.

Thank God for Mom! She’s God’s gift to you!

Thanking God for four moms whom I now know, or have known…
