Ephesians 5:25-27
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

Paul didn’t just have an opinion about Jesus. He lived, breathed, served, and talked about Jesus. So here in the middle of these words of application about living in the grace of God, even as he tells husbands and wives how they are to relate to one another, he goes off topic and starts talking about what Jesus has done for his church. Paul can’t stop talking about the church: her beauty, splendor, holiness, and purity.
This is Jesus’ work, and it was no small task. For we – apart from Jesus – are a motley crew! We needed washing, cleansing, sanctifying; we needed a severe blemish removal. And that’s what Christ has done. He loved his bride and sacrificed his life for her. And by his death he saved her. Her rescue cost him his life. But now he is alive again – risen from the dead – and he can’t stop talking about her. For by Christ’s grace she (we!) is beautiful, pure, splendid, and set apart for his special love and attention.
Next time you see a husband loving his wife in a sacrificial manner look closely: this is a reflection of Christ’s love for the Church. And when you see a wife with an adoring glow of love toward her husband remember this: that is the demeanor we are to have toward Christ our Lord. That might also put a new spin on how you treat your spouse.
