Light from the Word and through the lens

Ephesians 4:7-16

But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says,

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives,
and he gave gifts to men.”

( In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)

Election of anyone will bring political favors to certain supporters and key staff. The ascendence of a candidate to elected office will bring others along into offices, posts and appointments of varying amounts of influence.

With Christ’s ascension came a host of followers who were once captive; there were many (a host) who now are raised to new freedom and life. A careful reading of these few words help us understand the profound implications of our redemption. Christ’s ascension has grand and glorious implication for his followers. He has ascended. He is glorified. We will one day experience the fullness of his exaltation in realms of glory we will experience.

When your candidate wins you don’t necessarily expect a White House job, or even an invitation to a state dinner there. There is not enough room. There are too many people. We’re not important enough. But Christ’s kingdom is large enough for all of us. And though it may be enough for us to sneak in barely inside the door, the reality is that we will be celebrated even as we celebrate the presence of others there. We will be known even as we know the others at the victory’s feast. We will love and be loved together with all who are in the realm of Christ’s glory.

It’s all because of Jesus Christ, and to his glory. He who descended into the realm of our deepest failure, sin, and brokenness has conquered every enemy. By his grace he now leads us toward glory, exaltation, and a full experience of his grace. We are destined to a glorious exaltation with Jesus – our brother and redeemer. Those who follow Jesus all the way will be exalted to heavenly splendor and glory.
