Light from the Word and through the lens

Ephesians 4:1-3

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Because of the Father’s love and Christ’s atoning sacrifice we have a covenant relationship with God: forgiven, redeemed, ransomed, justified, and saved. Because of God’s love and Christ’s sacrifice on the cross we are children of God; that’s our identity. Because of what Christ has done for us, we are to “live under him in his kingdom and serve him.” Because Christ is our King, we have a kingdom calling to represent him in the world.

According to these words we represent him best when we are humble, gentle, patient, forbearing, and expressing the unity that is ours in Christ. Our covenant identity is being. Our kingdom calling is walking. Sometimes we make witnessing so religious and freighted with spiritual truths that we disconnect ourselves from the world and have no impact in the world or with our friends.

A member of a congregation I formerly served once called me and asked if he could be my friend. I was delighted at the invitation. We enjoyed many lunches together and, indeed, I became his friend. That’s the kind of walk that God invites us to: a walk that is about the every-day living attitudes and actions that build friendships, encourage kindness, and display humility. And it best describes Jesus’ walk while on the earth.
