John 1:14

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

I love this passage: all of John 1. The message conveys a profound mystery: God becoming flesh. This is also an incredible blessing: He is the One who is full of grace and truth. The profound spiritual and theological realities conveyed here in John’s gospel are partly responsible for John’s symbol, the eagle. John soars into the highest heights of the cosmic realms, conveying high and lofty truths of God. He tells us that the Word was eternally present. He explains that the Word created all things. He proclaims that in the Word is life. That’s the mystery.

But there is a deep blessing here: the Word became flesh and actually dwelt among us – full of grace and truth. Oh how great a blessing this is! God is not content to be a theory, theology, philosophy, or concept. God became a baby. And this baby is full of grace and truth. Grace makes truth bearable. Truth make grace precious. The truth is we need God’s presence. We need the life that is in Him. We need a savior. We need mercy, forgiveness, and love. We need grace.

And here it is – all in one – the profound mystery (truth) together with the incredible blessing (grace), all in the Child whose birth we celebrate today.

Christ, to Thee, with God the Father,
And, O Holy Ghost, to Thee
Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving
And unending praises be,
Honor, glory, and dominion,
And eternal victory
Evermore and evermore.

¹ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ² He was in the beginning with God. ³ All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. ⁴ In him was life,and the life was the light of men. ⁵ The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

⁶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. ⁷ He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. ⁸ He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

⁹ The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. ¹⁰ He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. ¹¹ He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. ¹²But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, ¹³ who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
